Answer

The controller on this system will monitor backup pump operation and the charge on the battery and will sound an alarm if the backup pump activates or the battery charge gets low or fails to charge. If you are looking for a system to notify you via phone, the WSSM40V is the same system but with phone notification, and does require a land based phone network for that feature.

Does the backup pump require a weep hole? Also, will this unit cycles frequently in bad weather, and should I install a rubber boot?

Answer

The Wayne WSS30V combo system already includes check valves for both pumps so the weep hole is NOT required for either pump. All backup pump float switches are very similar and typically run anywhere from 10 to 20 seconds after the float has dropped to the original position, so this is usually not an issue. With this system, the backup pump will actually run for an additional 20-25 seconds. Installing a union or rubber boot somewhere along the discharge pipe is pretty common and it will definitely give you a point to access the system for maintenance and service, whenever needed.

What size battery is required. Does charger shut off when battery is fully charged (does it have overcharge protection)? Where is the main pump suction port? What activates the back up pump? What is the horsepower of the backup pump. If the main pump fails can it be replaced by any pump?

Answer

The recommended battery is the Wayne WSB1275 - Maintenance Free AGM Backup Sump Pump Battery (75 Amps) for the Wayne WSS30V - 1/2 HP Combination Primary and Backup Sump Pump System, however most any 12V, deep cycle, maintenance free AGM battery will work in the 75 amp or 100AH (amp hour) rating. The oversize battery case (included) will accommodate a 12-volt SLA battery (up to a 27-frame size).
Be certain that the area around the batteries is well ventilated. Before servicing the batteries, blow away gasses by waving a piece of cardboard near the batteries.

The control box has a DC charger designed to shorten the recharging time of your battery, and to prevent overcharging. In addition, the control box has
a time delay which keeps the pump from repeated, short cycles when it shuts off. The time delay feature will allow the pump to run 20-25 seconds after the switch reaches the off position.

The main pump suction on this pump is actually just above the base where the line of square holes surround that bottom section of the pump. This is what's known as a top-suction and will help prevent clogging of debris that might normally clog a bottom suction pump.

The backup pump is activated by a separate float switch that is set to activate a few inches higher than the main pump float switch.

Since most backup pumps are operating on DC 12V power, they do not have any HP rating. Rather, they are rated in GPH (gallons per hour). The backup pump in this system can pump a healthy 2300GPH at a 10 foot head which rivals many standard 1/3HP 120V operated primary or main sump pumps.

If the main pump should fail, it is recommended that you replace it with another Wayne CDU800 - 1/2 HP Cast Iron Submersible Sump Pump w/ Vertical Float Switch since all the piping and included check valve is already setup for that pump.
Of course, if you should decide to go with another pump, you could always separate the two pumps at a later date and go with the pump of your preference.

I would also suggest reading the WSS30V INSTALLATION MANUAL for more information on how this system operates and is installed.

Jim. I have a 11 inch basin size. I am interested in a combination primary and back up sump system. What do you recommend. Price is not an issue. I am interested in Zoeller, Liberty, or Wayne or whatever you recommend. I dont think I can jackhammer out the basin if I had to, although I would love to.

Answer

Thank you for your interest in Sump Pumps Direct. Each pump has it's own float switch. The float switch for the battery backup pump is set a few inches higher than the float switch for the main pump. When the main or primary pump is having difficulty keeping up with demand, the water level will rise higher insider your sump basin, thus setting off the secondary or battery backup pump to assist. This process will take place whenever you have AC power available to the system. In the event of a power outage, the battery backup pump, will obviously be your only working pump.

Answer

Depending on the water table in your area and the potential for flooding you could go either way. If your water removal needs are below average, you could elect to go with a low GPH rated battery backup sump pump or water powered backup. Please note that water powered systems will only work with a minimum of 20-40 PSI. They will not work if you draw your water from a well. The typical water powered system would provide between 300-1000GPH of pumping capacity. If you're in a little higher water table that the flooding potential is a bit higher, you may want to consider a battery backup system rated at between 1000-2300GPH. If the flooding potential and water table are very high, you might look at the systems rated at 2400GPM and higher. You should also check with your local municipality to make sure that they are allowed as some municipalities have outlawed them as they do waste water in a sense.

If the 120 v pump can't keep up it sounds as if the battery backup pump will kick in---but the units share a common pipe so how can you add water /flow to an already maxed out pipe?? Would this not just increase head pressure on the battery pump causing it to work even harder????

Thank you for visiting Sump Pumps Direct. You bring up a very good and important point, Mark! Most primary (1/4HP - 1/2HP) and battery backup pumps discharge to a 1-1/2" discharge pipe and will be installed separately but due to the discharge system already in place, be piped or "Y'd" together. In MOST cases, the total pumping capacity by both pumps at the same time will be handled by that 1-1/2" discharge pipe and will not cause any extra stress or back-pressure on those pumps. That being said, for optimum performance of both pumps, they should be connected to separate discharge pipes. Again, that is not always possible. In cases of extreme high water tables and frequent possible flooding where high capacity pumps are required, you should definitely run a separate discharge pipe for each pump you have installed.

Is this Wayne WSS30V - 1/2 HP Combination Primary and Backup Sump Pump System an AC/DC system or a DC system? Also please let me know if I have this straight. An AC/DC system means that the backup pump can be called into use if the main system is overloaded. In a DC system the backup pump only gets called into service if there is a power failure on the first.

Answer

The Wayne model WSS30V is a combination primary sump pump and battery backup sump pump. The primary pump will operate on 120 volts and the battery backup pump operates on 12 volts from the battery that is installed along with the system and will operate when there is a loss of power. The battery backup pump will also operate in the event the primary pump cannot handle the incoming water, but will operate using the battery power and NOT 120 volts.
