Good Product Bad Product Support

The product was easy enough to install however the battery leads had to be extended to allow for installation. This was an expensive alteration. I called the Wayne service rep and they said they didn’t provide longer leads because the unit was not to used outside. I asked what that meant exactly. She said four walls and a roof. I guess if you put it in a doghouse you are okay? The irony here is the unit that needed longer leads was in a basement so definitely inside. What’s more there was nothing at all in the installation manual or specs about interior or exterior use.

Expert Response
Thank you for providing feedback about the sump pump system. Combination/Backup systems like this are typically designed to accommodate the most common residential sump applications that are found in the US. Wayne states in the owner's manual (page 2) "System is intended for indoor use only" and (page 6) "Battery box should be placed within six feet of the sump". For more information, please refer to the WSS30VN Owner's Manual

Well Made Unit

This combination ac/dc pump is well made. The dc backup is better than others I have used. The wiring in the battery box lid a bit awkward when trying to check on battery. I really like the dc pump test button, which helps keep backup pump from seizing up from lack of use when the power stays on.

Installation Review

Review Posted 01/10/2022
The combo is quite efficient space wise. The primary pump empties the basin quietly and quickly. I was disappointed the check valve leaked from the start and I had to replace it. I was also surprised Wayne does not include 2 rubber collars with clamps to attach the check valve to the unit and to the ejection PVC.

Installation was straight-forward. Performs well: empties sump in reasonable amount of time very quiet running for both pumps. Cannot comment on quality or value, installed it less than two weeks ago, and haven't had a power outage during a bad storm yet. Ask me in a couple years. Am being forced by web page to comment on Features, Quality, and Value, so am checking Average.

I am pleased

The pump combination comes well packaged and included everything that I needed with the exception of PVC, connectors, and battery (all of which I knew and expected).
Installation was simple, as the pump assembly is in one piece - so you add PVC, the included check valve, and some time connecting everything. The instructions were clear and helpful. Zip ties were also included in the package. allowing me to tie the power lines to the PVC, making the installation look professional!
My sump's diameter is on the smaller side. That said, the dimensions of the pump assembly were accurate and once resting on the bottom of the sump, there was sufficient room to situate the pump to accommodate the discharge line while preventing the floats from touching the sump's wall. Actually, I found the floats to be 'smartly' located, greatly reducing the risk to them being obstructed.
I would make two changes if I could. ONE - make the 12v pump replaceable. (I was told only the 110v pump was replaceable and if the 12v pump had to be replaced, I would need to buy another complete assembly.) TWO - make the battery box another two inches taller as many deep cycle batteries have a 'carrying strap' that adds to the battery's height, making the lid not fit perfectly. NEITHER of the these things is a deal breaker in my book.
Both pumps are quiet workhorses and appear to be very well made. (Time and use will be the determining factors, but for now, I am pleased.)
Suggestions:
DO NOT bargain shop when buying a battery. Use the suggested rating as your starting point. I live near a lake and have a high water table. I know that when I need that battery, I don't want it to be a lightweight.
PLUG your pump and your battery into separate outlets on separate circuits. This way, should you blow a fuse/breaker, you do not disable both pumps.

Jim. I have a 11 inch basin size. I am interested in a combination primary and back up sump system. What do you recommend. Price is not an issue. I am interested in Zoeller, Liberty, or Wayne or whatever you recommend. I dont think I can jackhammer out the basin if I had to, although I would love to.

How does the system determines that the primary pump is not keeping up? By water level? running time of the primary?
Also, if the primary fails/breaks does the backup kicks in?

If the 120 v pump can't keep up it sounds as if the battery backup pump will kick in---but the units share a common pipe so how can you add water /flow to an already maxed out pipe?? Would this not just increase head pressure on the battery pump causing it to work even harder????

Is this Wayne WSS30V - 1/2 HP Combination Primary and Backup Sump Pump System an AC/DC system or a DC system?
Also please let me know if I have this straight. An AC/DC system means that the backup pump can be called into use if the main system is overloaded. In a DC system the backup pump only gets called into service if there is a power failure on the first.
