Great Buy
By Bob

Review Posted 03/03/2019
I have had this unit installed for 6yrs now. I only had to rely on this back up system once for a extended period of time (5hrs). The pump ran every 12 seconds within that 5hr period. At the 5hr mark, the power came back on and the battery stated that it had 25% battery life left.
I have only added distilled water to the battery once within this 6yrs. This unit is great and is well worth the money. I installed this unit within 1hr by myself and I am not a plumber. PS. I have a carbon Monoxide alarm sitting within 8 inches of the battery the whole time and this unit has yet to set it off.

I had the big dog for 10 years and it has been a love-hate relationship. We got the big dog because I was afraid the smaller units couldn't keep up with the volume of water. When this thing works, to works very well and it has saved up in several power outages... BUT, when it's not needed it can be a real pain. It has a lot if diagnostics which are great but I there are enough shortcomings that make me seek something else now that it's time for a replacement. Some of the issues include:
1) Popped fuses (both the 25amp and 4amp fuses). I've replaced both at least a 1/2 dozen times
2). Battery charging-- I read somewhere that the charger in this unit uses basic technology and doesn't have some of the advanced features common in most trickle chargers. I can't confirm this but can say that I've gone through about 4 batteries in 10 yrs so I'm getting FAR less life out of these than I should (it may be a battery issue but my bet is in the charger). Also, the unit struggles to recharge a dead battery (as in recovering after a power outage) and it will pop fuses. I find that I have get my car charger to bring the battery back to full charge as the unit can't.
3) My latest issue is that my unit s now beeping saying pump failure, however the unit is pumping as it should whenever it runs a self test. Granted it's 10 yrs old now so I guess I can't ask much at this point.
Bottom line, I'm ready to find something new and I'm willing to pay extra if I end up with fewer headaches

Will Buy Another

Review Posted 01/13/2014
We've lived in our house since 1995 and bought this bad boy in 2006 after our basement flooded due to a sump pump too small. The backup pump served us until 2010 when the battery finally kicked as did the electronic unit. I tried replacing the battery with a marine battery but the unit fried a battery that wasn't from the mfr.
We let it sit for a year without replacing and we had our second basement flood. Twice in 20+ years and both times is when we didn't have the backup. Stood the test of time well. Will buy another.

Just Had Flooded My Whole Basement

The activation switch is absolutely unreliable. The rising water level mostly doesn't activate the switch. One must violently jerk the floats in order to activate pumping. You just cost me around $5000 and one horrible evening. Thank you very much!

Manufacturer Response
John we are sorry that you did have a bad experience. Just to confirm in order to activate the switch to work you should not have to jerk the switches to kick on the pump. The floats only need to rise 1/4 of an inch to activate the pump to run. If this was the case in your situation we would like you to call us for replacement floats or to arrange sending in your controller for repair. Our phone number is 800-991-0466 Ext.3 for technical support.

For years I have used a Bilge Pump from a boat to serve as a sump crock back up. It has been a reliable performer. It used a
separate 3/4" line for discharge. Because of the twelve foot head and restricted diameter, it did not have an adequate volume.
The Big Dog back up put it to shame. The Big Dog has put my concerns about volume and run time to rest.
Bottom Line- Installation was a breeze. Works better than expected. Would recommend to everyone. Very Pleased.

Great Quality

Quality- great.
Two small suggestions:
Provide a way to disconnect the float switch wire from the control box - it would make installation easier if you could work on the installation without the control box in the way.
Allow for a way to use a sealed marine style battery so that the low battery water light is not on all the time.
It has great directions, well made and while it tests out as advertised, I hope we never have to test it under a heavy load.

The system is set up to work with the Basement Watchdog battery (Model 30HDC140S); if you use their battery the fluid light will operate properly.

Indirect Sandy power outage
By Terry

Review Posted 11/06/2012
I just got this system installed a week ago Monday, October 29, 2012 (actually 2:15 AM October 30) I just completed the install and got it plugged in no more than 10 seconds before the power went out. It immediately went to battery operation and worked fine.
I was surprised that it worked showing the battery as fully charged, as I had just put the acid in the battery about 15 minutes before completing the hook up. I purchased the acid from a big box store which was the least expensive source. The acid price varied widely. The big box version comes in a plastic bag with a tube to feed it into the openings in the battery. The bag contains the same as 6 bottles from other sources.
I thought this would have to go through a charge cycle before it would work as back-up power, but apparently not since it worked as soon as it was connected. The power was out until 12 PM the next day.
I left the pump system working on battery until about 8 AM, when I hooked up my generator to power the key areas of the house. I do not know the long-term reliability as it has only been installed for a week; and that includes a new main Watchdog pump. I installed the back-up pipe to feed into the main pump pipe and used two anti-back-up valves.

Stood up to Hurricane Sandy
By Louis G.
New Jersey
Review Posted 11/02/2012
I have a summer home at the NJ shore outside of Atlantic City. It is a 95 year old perfectly restored property that is 1 1/2 blocks from the beach. Last year I decided to install 3 of the Basement Watchdog Big Combo units to replace three standard pumps in my 1500 sq. ft. basement.
We have just experienced the devastation of Hurricane Sandy while physically being in Florida for the season. We lost power in the first day of the storm, most likely sometime Monday; and just had the power restored this afternoon (Thursday). We had serious concerns first for our entire property and secondarily for the basement.
Yesterday we discovered that our house has no damage whatsoever, and the basement had a couple inches of water. Today someone physically entered the house and reported that the pumps were back up and running. The batteries were recharged and the basement was already clear of most of the water with only wet spots.
I suspect the three units handled the surge of the storm and lasted until the batteries ran out. Since the specifications are for 7.5 hrs of continuous running, there is no exact way to tell how long they lasted with some intermittent cycling after the storm and high tides passed, but considering this once in a lifetime storm I cannot say enough great things about these units.
For anyone wondering why they should spend more money for these units than ones that cost a lot less- read this again.

Wet Basement? Sump Pumps Direct is the way to go!
By Art

Review Posted 09/19/2012
The area that I live in has a lot of underground water. When we get heavy rains, the water comes up from underneath and my 2 sump pumps work overtime keeping up. I don't have much of a problem unless we lose electricity, then I have a major problem.
I have a back-up in the form of a portable generator, but if I am not home that does no good. I did have a small battery back-up system that was of lower quality and capacity.
Thanks to Sump Pumps Direct I have a good system in the Basement Watchdog to ease my worries. Everything shipped to my doorstep quickly and neatly. I will definitely call Sump Pumps Direct when I need anything else.

Only house on the block not flooded

Review Posted 08/13/2012
I am happy to say I installed this backup system just in time, before we were hit with the worst hurricane storm in years.
We lost power on and off for 4 days and while all the houses around me had 1-2 feet of water in their basements I had only to wipe up a puddle from a leaky basement window.
This system saved my furnished basement from ruin...It doesn't get better than that.
